Diagnosis and Symptoms
Question from Charlottesville, Virginia, USA:
I was just diagnosed with type 1 diabetes yesterday, and I a physically fit 31 year old male. What is going on here? Is this common? Is it possible I’ve been misdiagnosed?
Answer:
It is not rare to have new-onset type 1 diabetes at age 31. I don’t know if you have been misdiagnosed or not without being able to review the primary data. With more information about the immune response in type 1 diabetes, we are able to identify antibodies in the serum that correspond to autoimmune diabetes. Patients with Late-onset Autoimmune Diabetes of Adulthood (LADA) tend to have an onset that is similar to type 2 diabetes but end up requiring insulin.
