Question from Orange, California, USA:

My 49 year old friend has type 2 diabetes with severe peripheral neuropathy, and I would like to assist in obtaining any information about the intrathecal drug delivery system for insulin being offered to her. Where can I find information about this?

Answer:

From: DTeam Staff

I have never heard of insulin being given through an intrathecal delivery system. I suspect, if your friend has severe painful neuropathy, she is receiving pain medication through this device.

Additional comments from Dr. Donough O’Brien:

This is probably for pain therapy.

[Editor’s comment: Several companies manufacture ambulatory pain pumps. See Deltec: CADD-Prizm PCS Pain Control System, Model 6101 and Medtronic’s intrathecal drug delivery systems for examples.
