A1c (Glycohemoglobin, HgbA1c)
Question from New York, USA:
My 8 year old son has had type 1 diabetes since June 30, 2003. He A1C at that time was 10.2. His A1C in September 2003 was 6.5 and his last one done recently was 5.9. He has been on an insulin pump for almost a month now. What is considered a good A1C number for a child this age? Is the 5.9 actually too low? A few times a week he will have some “lows” of 50 or 60 which of course we are trying to avoid and his highs of about 250 come also a few times a week. We rarely have number above 300.
Answer:
The HbA1c level of your child is very good, indeed. Perhaps he has some hypoglycemia, but you have to check his blood sugar levels more often in order to avoid them.
