Exercise and Sports
Question from Minnesota, USA:
My daughter is 12 years old and was diagnosed with type 1 about two years ago. Just in the past week she has developed a shortness of breath, usually when playing basketball or running. Is this diabetes related or could she be getting asthma? She sometimes gets ‘shaky’ also, but is not having a low blood sugar.
Answer:
Being out of breath may be simply because the exertion was unaccustomed: it would be very unlikely indeed at your daughter’s age to be due to the diabetes. Exercise-induced asthma is something to ask your pediatrician about because it needs a more detailed history and a proper physical examination to confirm the diagnosis.
