Quite a ride. When first diagnosed, the hospital instructed my mother to boil my reusable glass syringe and reusable stainless steel needle in distilled water each morning for 3 minutes before using. I then took a large dose of long acting insulin and closely monitored my food intake and exercise to match the long acting insulin activation curve. I test my urine sugar 4 times daily, 10 drops of water, 5 drops of urine then add a reagent tablet then sit back and watch the bubbles and heat create a color of liquid in the test tube. The color roughly correlated to my bg. Then clean everything for the next test, took about a total of 10-15 minutes.

In about 1988 I was hired as the chief engineer for the Accu-Chek Advantage BG system. A 30 second test with less than 2 minutes of set-up and clean up time.

I’m now just into my 70s and my wife of 48 years helps with my care as I have limited mobility. I’m surrounded by a wonderful family; a daughter with two kids, a son who just gave us another grandchild, and a son in the navy who captains destroyers.

It’s been a wonderful life so far, I can’t complain … quite a ride.
