Mike DeWitt
Being diagnosed just after turning two years old I am grateful that I never had the opportunity to miss being “normal.” Growing up in a small town without knowing anyone like myself, I pushed to prove I was more than capable in any activity I threw myself into. Through the help of my parents and some great doctors in my youth I feel bulletproof and the courage to face any challenge head on.
Between participating in strongman competitions to riding cross-country on motorcycles I treat my diabetes like a ride along companion, it goes where I go so that makes us friends in a way.
When teaching people about my illness I often compare it to a dog to others amusement. Treating it like a pet makes the feelings of burnout and anger dissipate. It needs to be fed, watered, and loved to be healthy.
I would like to thank my best friend Wyatt Jones (who is also T1D) whom I met in the unlikeliest of places for his humor, support, and camaraderie. I wouldn’t be able to find a brother like him if I searched for the rest of my life.
