Tom

From his mom, Kathleen:

Tom was diagnosed on April 18, 2014. He was only one year old. His pediatrician, Dr. Whitney Short, caught it when I brought Tom into an appointment with an assortment of random symptoms, like wetting through his diapers and unexplained crying. She checked his blood sugar to rule out diabetes. To her shock, and ours, it was diabetes. Tom’s dad and I were so scared – we didn’t know anything about type 1 diabetes, and suddenly we were expected to give our baby five shots a day and check his blood sugar day and night. Our team at the Barbara Davis Center were with us every step of the way, especially Dr. Shideh Majidi, who now works at the Children’s National Hospital in Maryland. Over time, we settled into our new life – CGMs and insulin pumps made things easier on everybody. Throughout it all, Tom has shown real courage and strength, even on his hardest days. The future looks bright; we wish diabetes wasn’t along for the ride, of course, but it doesn’t run Tom’s life. We are so proud of him!
