Diagnosis and Symptoms

My 13 year old, who was in the DPT-1 clinical trial from age 7-12, was ICA positive at the beginning, but she did not have any other positive antibodies. Since she is no longer in the study, I feel very anxious about not knowing her health status. Her pediatrician doesn’t seem concerned, and I feel the doctor should be watching her more closely, but I have no idea what tests should be done.

My three year old son has had multiple high fasting blood sugars with negative urine glucose and ketones. I had him tested, his A1c was 5%, and his C-peptide was normal, but he had an islet cell antibody test result of 1.4 Should I be concerned about an ICA of 1.4?

If I don’t eat every few hours, I feel breathless, get a shaky feeling inside and I feel I need something sweet to eat or drink or I’ll pass out. After a meal, I crave something sweet, and then a couple of hours later I don’t feel right and have to get something to eat to feel better. I don’t drink or urinate more than usual. Should I go to the doctor?

My son is always thirsty, has begun eating excessively, and he is tired a lot. He has had several high blood glucose readings. We took him to our family doctor who told us that blood glucose monitoring was not accurate in kids and did a urine test which was negative. Is the home monitoring accurate in kids? What signs should I watch for? Should I take my son to a different doctor?

I had gestational diabetes during my three pregnancies, and, about eight months ago, during a severe UTI, they found a very high glucose level in my urine, but my blood test was negative. Lately, I’ve been tired and my feet ache. I’m not extremely thirsty or eating more, and I’ve always gone to the bathroom a lot. Should I push my doctor more to find out why I’m spilling a lot of sugar in my urine?

My six year old daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes a month ago and testing shows that it is specifically “a typical type 1 diabetes”. However, I do not understand exactly what this means. I’ve looked around on the Internet for more information but have had no luck. Can you explain what “a typical type 1 diabetes” means?

I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes about eight months ago when I was in treatment for a kidney stone, but after it passed I decided to go for a second opinion, the doctor did a two-hour glucose tolerance test and old me I do not have diabetes. I have an FAA medical exam coming up soon, and I am required by law to tell the truth. Have I been officially diagnosed with diabetes?

I had a glucose tolerance test, and I have gotten differing opinions from two doctors about the results. One of my doctors diagnosed type 2 diabetes and put me on Glucophage. My other doctor performed a Hemoglobin A1c which was 4.6%. This doctor says I should not be on Glucophage and that I do not have diabetes. Any insight into this?

Since my diagnosis of type 1 diabetes, I’ve been moving back and forth between the US and Denmark. Because I have dry dark brown patches, and the fact that I had DKA, the only endocrinologist I went to was undecided as to whether I have type 1 or type 2 diabetes. He suggested doing tests, but my Danish doctor said regardless of what the tests showed, the Danish system would still keep me on my current insulin injections. What should I do?

My seven year old daughter has had elevated sugar levels on my niece’s meter. I have told my daughter’s pediatrician about the sugar levels, he has tested her in the office and they were within the normal range so he doesn’t feel more testing is needed. How far should I go with the testing?
