Diagnosis and Symptoms

My three and one-half year old daughter seems to have an insatiable craving for sugar and carbohydrates. I can barely get her to eat anything besides spaghetti and macaroni. When she hasn’t eaten for more than three hours, she is extremely agitated. Is it possible that my daughter has hypoglycemia?

At our last visit the new care giver was suspicious that my daughter may not have diabetes, ordered antibody tests, and the “main two” were negative. We were told to stop her insulin and that she may not have diabetes. For the last four days her blood sugars have been within normal limits without insulin so obviously we are concerned.

My 12 year old stepson has been overweight since age four and prefers sedentary activities. His consumption of simple sugars is very high, he drinks much more fluid than anyone in the family and frequently has to urinate. Should my stepson be tested in any way? Could you please provide some guidelines that we might use to encourage a more healthy lifestyle?

I wrote to you a couple of years back as I had a routine blood test which found a blood sugar level of 7.8 mmol/l (fasting). You expressed that I needed a second test with a value of 7.0+ to confirm diabetes. The second test came back normal with a value of 4.4. Does the fact that I had a high value once mean that I am on my way to getting diabetes or even have a higher risk than the average population?

My 2 year old son is not ill and has been showing all classic signs of diabetes. On a home monitor (correctly calibrated) he has had levels as high as 427 recently. His A1c was normal at 5.0, and antibody test are negative.

Following my son’s brief seizure, I used my own glucose meter to test his blood sugars, some of which were elevated. Should I be pushing for a GTT and antibody testing? Or, do you agree these results are normal?
