Are there any statistics of insulin pump users who have either died or went into comas, etc? And if so, what were the causes?

We are considering an insulin pump for our son. Is there one pump that seems to work the best with kids? With the number of kids out there now on pumps what is the “best”? Are they all about the same? I am looking for an answer form those who live with it daily, not just the info put out by brochures. Any help you can give me would be great.

My seven year old son, who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes about five months ago, and his last A1c was 6.5%. However, he experienced a lot of lows during the summer and now that school has started, we are interested in the pump mainly for the ability to eat more freely, and my son hates getting shots. Is it possible to start on the pump before the honeymoon stage is over?

I have long term type 1 diabetes, and recently started pump therapy with Novolog, and my blood glucoses while on the pump are showing wide variations similar to the problem I had while on MDI (Lantus with Novolog). Prior to starting the “human” insulin, I had used “animal” insulin since diagnosis, and my endocrinologist believes that my “irregular” blood glucoses may be related to “insulin antibodies”.

My son has been on the pump for two months now and everything went well until five days ago when he suddenly started getting unexpected highs, and the boluses we gave were not as efficient as in the past. It seems to me that there are bubbles forming in the insulin cartridge. Can you please advise on how to get rid of these bubbles?

Our five year old was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at nine months of age. Since that time he has done very well with no major hypo episodes or hospitalizations, and his A1cs are consistently 6.5% to 7%. His diabetes team has recommended the pump, but I have some reservations. Would there be an advantage to starting him on the pump at this time?
