I have a child in my school with an insulin pump, and during the school day her blood sugar is checked when she arrives, before snack, before lunch, after lunch with recess, and before departing for home. It seems that this is an awful lot to be checking her blood sugars. How often should her blood sugars be checked?

My 15 year old daughter has had type 1 diabetes for two years now. For the last week or so, her levels have stayed continuously high (15-20 mmol/l [270-360 mg/dl]) and ketone readings between 0.2 and 1.0.
