Our eight year old son is the only child with type 1 diabetes in a small school, and current procedures state that he needs to go to the nurse’s office to monitor his blood sugar. There have been times when he has had to test his sugar when no nurse was in the office and he did it on his own. My son has type 1 diabetes, and I am very concerned about his safety at school. We have tried to make her teacher understand how important it is for her to eat, but every day this week the teacher has told me she forgot to feed her. What can I do to rectify this problem?

The district has only one nurse who travels between schools. Also, he is not allowed to ride the school bus. Is this legal? Is the school required to hire a full time nurse?

An eight year old student’s blood sugars at school fluctuate widely. She is falling behind in her studies and always appears to be “spacing out” in class. I have been told by her doctor’s office that there is no correlation between the fluctuation in blood sugar and the drop in her grades. Could you please send me information regarding this?
