Since insulin’s job is to get the blood sugar down, why can’t my son eat any thing he wants, even candies and give a larger dose of insulin?

I am writing to you as I am very concerned about my niece who is 2 years and 4 months old. Is it normal procedure for a toddler who has been diagnosed 3 weeks ago, to still be so unbalanced and going from an extreme high to an extreme low? Do you think that we should seek help from doctors in a nearby country?

I have a nephew who supposedly was waking up in the middle of the night with so-called nightmares. He woke up and seemed to have lack of control of his body. I saw an individual with low blood sugar once and his actions were similar. Can you advise me on anything or let me know if this could be related?

I understand there is a new 24 hour long acting insulin which has just been approved for marketing by the FDA. It is Lantus Glargine, made by Hoechst. Will this be a better option than NPH or Ultralente for a 4 year old recently diagnosed Type 1 child?
