I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 12. What we thought was cranky adolescence unveiled itself to be symptoms of severely high blood sugars. I got admitted into Riley Hospital at a whopping 65 pounds. The rest is history.

My journey with type 1 diabetes has been a very tiring but rewarding one. A year after my diabetes diagnosis my mother passed away, and nine months later my father passed away. Newly orphaned I had to learn to fully grasp the disease on my own.

Luckily before my father passed, he taught me most of what I knew. I would watch him spend hours in the kitchen scribbling notes, carbs, and calculations on notebooks to count the exact carb information in the meal he was making me.

Due to his intense diligence and attentive care, I’ve been able to successfully go over 10 years with no complications so far.

Thank goodness – hope to see y’all at the next one.
