My son’s endocrinologist has said diabetes is a progressive disease. Does this mean that the HbA1c worsens with time and that it becomes increasingly difficult to keep the blood sugars well controlled? Is an A1c under 6.5 more difficult the longer one has diabetes?

Since his diagnosis a about a year ago, my son has experienced episodes of hypoglycemia that persist for several hours despite repeated treatments and then hyperglycemia. He also gets hypoglycemic without exogenous insulin. Has this happened to others? What do you recommend?
