My 35 year old sister has been told ( or at least she tells us she has been told ) that she has “brittle diabetes”. She smokes marijuana regularly, abuses alcohol and mind-altering prescription drugs. Will this exacerbate the condition?

My 14 year old son has type 1. I also have an 11 year old daughter, and I worry she may also get type 1. What tests can be done to see if she will develop diabetes? How accurate are they? Do you recommend siblings be tested?
