I have had type 1 diabetes for the last 6 years. I take three injections a day, pre-breakfast, pre-lunch and pre-dinner. My 3 am blood sugars drop down to 40 mg/dl [2.2 mmol/L] or so, and my pre-breakfast readings are 200-250 mg/dl [11.1-13.9 mmol/L]. Please guide.

My daughter is 18 months old. She had had several high blood sugars, but sometimes is in the normal range. She had an insulin test which was low. The doctors tell us time will tell whether or not she has diabetes. Is there any way of getting her diagnosed short of her getting very sick?

My 15 year old son was diagnosed about a year ago with type 1 diabetes. He has maintained his blood sugar level okay. They are sometimes higher that we’d like (200s mg/dl [11.1 mmol/L]) and his lowest has been 46 mg/dl [2.6 mmol/l]. I feel like I am sitting and waiting for a time bomb to go off, especially with a teenager. Is it inevitable that problems will happen?

My son tested high at a free screening; the doctor did fasting urine and blood draws that were normal, no findings of diabetes, etc. Again, this happened at another free screening. His sugar was 350 again, we made our trip back to the doctor. Again his fasting tests were fine. Four months later, he was hospitalized with diabetes.

My 12 year old daughter has had Type 1 diabetes or five and one half years. She has been in fair to good control (A1C’s between 8-9%) most of this time. She had her first microalbumin test last week and it was 1100! This result was further confirmed by a 24 hour and a 12 hour collection. Can this kind of control cause this level of kidney this early in the disease process?
