My 9 year old daughter, diagnosed two years ago, read in the newspaper of the successful islet cell transplant surgery performed at the University of Alberta in Canada. She would like to know, realistically, how long before this treatment will be available to children in the United States.

I am diabetic, and I understand the negative effects of having high blood sugar, but what sort of complications can arise from having continually low blood sugar? What is the danger in being hypoglycemic on a regular basis?

I know of a child (12 years old) who has recently been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Why is she frequently listless? Does this have anything to do with the high level of ketones in her blood/urine?

Why is it that a person with untreated diabetes has to urinate all the time? I think I know the answer but would like someone to verify it. I feel I have a lot of the symptoms and would like to have this answered before I consult my doctor.

My daughter is 20 months old. I have had 2 daycare providers tell me they think she may have diabetes. Her symptoms are she is constantly thirsty, she won’t eat much, she vomits sometimes out of the blue, and she gets shaky and real grumpy, like she’s sick.
