I am a 26 year old female who has had type 1 diabetes for 21 years, and I have always maintained good control. Recently, I have started getting sharp, stinging pains in my hands that have gone up to my elbow at times when I wake up. Does this sound more like carpal tunnel syndrome, as opposed to the early signs of neuropathy?

Every morning before breakfast, my daughter’s blood sugar was 40 mg/dl [2.2 mmol/L], and right before lunch, it was about 70 mg/dl [3.9 mmol/L]. Her levels have never been over 72 mg/dl [4 mmol/L]and never under 40 mg/dl [2.2 mmol/L]. Is this something i should be very concerned with?

Is it possible that my son could be one of the rare cases in children that can be treated with pills? Is it possible that his diabetes can be treated with diet or perhaps Humalog alone for the occasional readings over 180 mg/dl [10 mmol/L] at mealtime?

I’ve read that a viral infection has sometimes been thought to be one of the causes of childhood diabetes. This three year old normal healthy boy was being treated for an ear infection about two months prior to his diagnosis. Is an ear infection considered a viral infection?
