I am 30 years old and have had type 1 diabetes for 17 years. I moved to Texas seven months ago, and, since then, I have lost 45 pounds without dieting. Why would this be?

My 21 year old son has had type 1 since the age of 18 months. His A1c’s were high until he became old enough to work with his diabetes. Now our son is on a pump and hiss A1c level are in the 6% range. He was diagnosed with stage one kidney disease a year ago. We don’t understand what this means in terms of life expectancy and quality of life.

My daughter was diagnosed as mildly autistic and we’ve noticed she becomes very irritable and irrational at times. We note that after we feed her this goes away and she is calm. Could this be diabetes or hypoglycemia?

This question is about type 1 diabetes in a 14 year old male, which was missed for a long period of time. Symptoms are said to appear “suddenly”. How suddenly is suddenly? How long could a child have type 1 diabetes without anyone noticing? Once onset has occurred, how long before fatal?

My ten year old son was diagnosed with type 1 three months ago. He is taking 1 unit of Ultralente at night. As long as the child is healthy, growing and consuming enough calories, what are the benefits of giving large quantities of carbohydrate and increasing insulin to give the pancreas “rest”?
