Every time my two year old son gets a cold or virus his sugar goes high and sometimes really low. Does this sound like early stages of diabetes or does this typically happen to all children when they get sick? Is it possible for a child without diabetes to have a blood sugar of 356 mg/dl [19.8 mmol/L] if he is sick with virus?

I am 31 years old, have had type 1 diabetes for the last 13 years, and my husband and I are considering pregnancy. Although I have high sugars (200-300 mg/dl [11.1-16.7 mmol/L] several times a week, my HbA1c has consistently been in the normal range (5.8-6.2%). Could the low numbers be due to my thalassemia trait?

I tested my son’s sugar using my meter, and found that his sugar, two hours after eating, was 8.9 mmol/L [160 mg/dl]. The next morning, I tested his fasting glucose which was was 4.5 mmol/L [81 mg/dl]. His doctor she said there was no worry as long as his fasting glucose didn’t go over 7 mmol/L [126 mg/dl]. Should I be concerned with the higher test of 8.9 [160 mg/dl]?

My husband has type 1 diabetes, diagnosed when he was 18, and we’re about to have our first child. I read that her chances of developing diabetes are 6-7%. I plan to breastfeed because I’ve heard that can reduce the chances of a child developing diabetes. Will this offset the role of heredity at all? How long should I try to breastfeed?

At present, I treat my diabetes by diet alone, but it looks as though I might have to go onto tablets. Since I drive for a living, I am very concerned because I understand that certain tablets will affect your driving license and others will not. Is that true and what are they?
